Once again, the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) has proved its mettle by putting together what promises to be a fun-packed event for its members.
UNAA started in the late 80’s, inspired by the American Thanksgiving holiday. Every last Thursday of November, families meet and spend some time together – a celebration of life. From these humble beginnings, the organization has grown to a national organization that creates a warm community for its members and helps them stay connected with their peoples and cultures back in Uganda. Moreover, the organization aims to create opportunities for social and business networking.
Frank Ssennoga, a member of the 2009 Chicago convention, said the opportunity for meeting new business contacts was one of the attractions for the 1,300 members who will attend this year’s convention. The three-day meeting will be held at the Downtown Chicago Marriot this weekend from today until Sunday.
“There is something for everybody,” Ssennoga said.
Master of Ceremonies Dennis Paulo Kavuma, promises convention attendees an opportunity “to be in Uganda, away from Uganda.”
Ssennoga gave more details about this, as he described how the organizing committee has worked with the hotel, to ensure that Ugandan cuisine is prepared according to the standards people expect.
“We trained the hotel staff to cook the food, and showed them where to purchase the ingredients. Both the Marriott and the Hyatt have been very accommodating in this respect,” he said.
Other important business to be attended to during the convention includes electing a new executive committee to guide the organization for the next two years.
Frank Musisi, the current president is vying for re-election on a platform of independence, accountability and transparency.
A United States Army Lieutenant, Musisi wishes to “continue the change” according to www.musis.net.
Ssenoga predicted that once again, the organization will hold “free and fair elections.”
“However,” he added, “the fact that more people show up for the convention each year challenges us logistically, but I believe we will still do a great job.”

The registration fee is $ 240, which will covers fees for all forums, planned entertainment events and meals. Accommodation has been arranged with the Downtown Chicago Marriott, and an overflow hotel is located only a few blocks from it.
Since most of the people will be flying, the convention committee has made arrangements with AirTran Airways, which will give discounts to attendees flying into Chicago from all over the United States.
The convention also attracts other East Africans.
We wish our Ugandan brothers and sisters a joyous and productive time together.
